With the beginning of this new year, San Sebasti\u00e1n has proudly become the European Capital of Culture 2016 (DSS2016EU). This year is going to be a great time to visit San Sebastian! The already culturally rich city is going to be injected with even more culture this year with the help from a myriad of special events centering around art, music, gastronomy and many more themes.<\/div>\r\n\r\n

The official start date for San Sebastian<\/a>\u2019s reign as European Capital of Culture will begin on January 20th, coinciding with the city\u2019s Tamborrada<\/strong> festival which is also known as San Sebastian Day<\/strong>. As with every year, thousands of drums will be played throughout the city starting at midnight on the 20th and continue on, non-stop for another 24 hours, just as it has been done for centuries.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Although the Tamborrada only lasts 24 hours, this year will be different. The drums will stop but the celebrations will continue on with a full program of cultural activities such as concerts, theater, exhibitions and much more. Finally, on January 23rd, the opening ceremony for the European Capital of Culture<\/strong> will take place, during which spectators will be able to enjoy a very special and unique visual show around the Urola River and the Maria Cristina Bridge<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

One of the reasons that San Sebastian was selected for the title of European Capital of Culture is because of its Basque identity. While the Basque people are eager to learn from the multiculturalism of today\u2019s world<\/strong>, it is also very important for them not to forget their Basque traditions and roots<\/strong>. This balance is something that can be difficult for any society to achieve but it is something that Donostiarras (locals of San Sebastian) have excelled in. Showing how San Sebastian is able to mix tradition into a modern city<\/strong> will be one of the main messages of this year\u2019s events.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
